MMA and BJJ Injuries: Common Mixed Martial Art Injuries

mma.injuries
Last weeks injury to one of the greatest MMA fighters in the world showed that even the greatest fighters are susceptible to injury and it’s not a matter of will you get injured while performing MMA it’s a matter of when.

So having the right fight doctor in your corner, who understands the type of stress that you put your body under while fighting, may be the difference between a win or loss. For the less enthusiastic or weekend warrior, an experienced doctor may just keep you healthy and back to work on Monday morning.

Although many people may believe that most MMA fighters are at risk of major injuries history shows that minor injuries are most common while training.

Some of the most common injuries were lacerations and elbow and especially lower neck and knee injuries.

Lacerations:
These are some of the most common type of injuries found in MMA fighters. With the constant barrage of punches and kicks a fighter can really tear up the skin a bit sometimes causing bloody wounds. Most lacerations to the face are the bloodiest and can look worse than they really are.

The treatment: If the laceration is minor, doctors use special tapes, called Steri-Strips, to close the wound. Other doctors opt to use a special glue to keep bacteria out of the wound.

Knee Injuries:
Because of the constant twisting, pivoting, pushing and shooting in on opponents looking for single and double legs this can cause real damage to a small tender ligament in the knee called the posterior cruciate ligament.

This ligament is mostly injured in people who hit their knee on a dashboard during motor vehicle accident.

That’s because when you shoot in for a single or double leg on your opponent, there is a (posterior) backwards directed force across the knee. This is something that is very unusual in other sports but is found to becoming very common with MMA fighters.

As with anything rest is essential in the recovery of an MMA fighter even for the weekend MMA fighter.

Prevention

Although other sports use safety precautions to avoid these injuries, these injuries aren’t always avoidable for MMA fighters. Punching and kicking correctly, knowing when to submit to a hold and wearing the right equipment can minimize their injury risk.
