The nerves that exit from the neck travel down the arm and into the hand. Whenever these nerves become blocked or pinched from herniated or protruded cervical discs it can cause neck pain, muscle spasm, shoulder pain, inflammation, arm and hand pain, weakness of grip, numbness, tingling, even night pain.
Because these symptoms are the same as those of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), herniated discs in the neck are often misdiagnosed as CTS. In fact, sometimes surgery to the carpal tunnel is even performed erroneously (even though the cause is in the neck)…if you can believe that.
Once it is determined that the underlying cause of a patients neck, arm and hand pain is coming from a herniated or bulging disc (usually confirmed by MRI) we will first attempt to help with conservative treatments such as chiropractic, massage, and physical therapy.
